Vancouver traffic. Removing the HOV requirements during the Pattullo bridge crisis?

January 23rd, 2009

As was mentioned on the news, there has been some discussion and pressure to remove the requirements for the HOV lane on Hwy 1. This would be done to help ease the Vancouver traffic congestion.

Interesting. So who is breaking under the pressure? Transit isn’t a viable option? Afterall it’s an interesting time. Who will blink first? This is a wonderful time in Vancouver traffic. Where are the car pooling resources in the media? I haven’t seen many stories promoting car pooling. After all, is there a better opportunity to “sell” the benefits of car pooling and the HOV lane? No this would be that golden moment. The time to show the world. People where are you? This is the opportunity to thrust your websites and carpooling networking resources into the media. There would be a flood of enthusiasm! Or would there be? Perhaps there just aren’t any resources out there and there just isn’t enough organization for car pooling in Vancouver. Me thinks this is the biggest issue. It’s not that people don’t want to do car pooling, it’s just that the resources and ease of setting up isn’t up to snuff.

I heard a discussion on CKNW. The point was, the powers that be will NOT be changing the HOV lane requirements. The point is, why should the people who bother to car pool suffer during this time? They should be benefiting the most you would think during such horrendous Vancouver traffic. Thankfully, this is the way it’s going to be. No changes, and no breaking under the pressure. Grand, you can now all look at a completely underutilized lane of pavement and wonder why it’s that way.

One aspect worth mentioning is the problem with the truck drivers during this time. It’s very bad for them as you might imagine. Should they be suffering also? They can’t exactly car pool can they?
